OBD-II fault code

P2E98: Charge Port Door B Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The charge port door B position sensor reports a circuit condition. Door state cannot be verified reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Door B’s position sensor reports whether the charge-port door is open or closed so the charging system controller can verify its state. P2E98 sets when the controller detects a fault in the sensor circuit and cannot reliably confirm that position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and live Door B position status while opening and closing the door, and check whether the reported state changes.
  2. Inspect the position sensor, its mounting, and the door mechanism for damage, misalignment, or obstruction.
  3. Check the sensor connector and wiring for looseness, moisture, corrosion, or chafing near the moving door.
  4. Test the sensor circuit and sensor output against the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the sensor and wiring pass, check the controller input and related faults before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Clear debris or correct a loose or misaligned sensor mounting.
  • Clean and secure the sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the Door B position-sensor circuit.
  • Replace a position sensor that fails its specified circuit test.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally safe if the door is secured, but the vehicle may not verify that Door B is open or closed and charging could be delayed or interrupted. Make sure the door is fully closed before driving and keep enough range for another charging option.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
