OBD-II fault code

P2E4F: Battery Charger Coupler Temperature Sensor D Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the battery charger coupler temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Temperature sensor D monitors a specific area of the battery-charger coupler. The control module checks the sensor's electrical circuit and sets P2E4F when it detects a circuit fault that makes the D temperature signal unreliable, so charging may be limited or stopped.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and charging faults, then check live data for sensor D and compare it with the other coupler temperature readings.
  2. With the charging connector safely disconnected, inspect sensor D's connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, moisture, chafing, or damage.
  3. Check the sensor D circuit continuity and connections according to the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the sensor D signal and supply or return circuits against the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a wiring fault from a failed sensor.
  5. Repair the identified fault, then confirm sensor D reports plausibly and charging completes without the code returning.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose sensor D connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded sensor D terminals if the manufacturer permits.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the sensor D circuit.
  • Replace temperature sensor D if circuit checks pass but the sensor fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on normal charging until the sensor D circuit fault is diagnosed, because the vehicle may restrict or interrupt charging when it cannot trust that temperature reading. Stop charging if the coupler becomes unusually hot or the connector shows damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
