What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger coupler temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Temperature sensor D measures the temperature at a particular area of the battery-charger coupler. The control module sets P2E50 when the D circuit signal is electrically present but its value or response does not behave as expected, potentially causing charging to be limited or interrupted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live readings for sensor D, comparing its value and response with the other coupler sensors under similar conditions.
- With charging safely stopped, inspect sensor D's mounting and confirm it is seated in the intended position.
- Inspect the sensor D connector and wiring for damage, moisture, corrosion, or a loose connection that could distort the reading.
- Monitor sensor D while the coupler temperature changes and compare its response with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the mounting and wiring are sound but the reading remains implausible, test and replace sensor D as indicated by the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Refit sensor D securely in its specified position.
- Repair a loose, damaged, or corroded sensor D connector or wiring.
- Replace sensor D if its reading or response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Clear the fault and verify that sensor D tracks temperature normally during a charging check.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be restricted or interrupted while sensor D gives an implausible reading, so arrange diagnosis before depending on a full charge. Stop if the coupler becomes unusually hot or the connector is damaged.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
