OBD-II fault code

P0D99: Battery Charger Coupler Temperature Sensor A Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the battery charger coupler temperature sensor a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Temperature sensor A monitors temperature at the battery charger coupler so the vehicle can manage charging safely. The control module monitors the sensor's electrical circuit and sets P0D99 when it detects a circuit fault, making the reported coupler temperature unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for sensor A's reported temperature and note whether it is implausible or drops out when the fault occurs.
  2. With charging stopped, inspect the coupler and inlet for heat damage, discoloration, moisture, or a loose sensor connector.
  3. Inspect sensor A's wiring and connector for chafing, corrosion, broken conductors, or damaged terminals.
  4. Compare sensor A's reading with other available temperature data when the coupler has stabilized, and check for changes while gently moving the harness.
  5. Test sensor A and its circuit for continuity and signal behavior using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor A connector or terminal.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the coupler temperature sensor A circuit.
  • Replace a corroded or damaged connector.
  • Replace coupler temperature sensor A if it fails the circuit tests.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may be limited or stop because the vehicle cannot trust the coupler temperature reading. Stop charging if the connector or inlet feels unusually hot or shows heat damage, and have the fault addressed before relying on repeated charging.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
