What it means
The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the battery charger coupler temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Temperature sensor D monitors a specific area of the battery-charger coupler. P2E51 means the control module sees the D circuit signal below its expected electrical range, commonly from a signal short to ground or a sensor fault, and may limit or stop charging.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live sensor readings to confirm that the D signal is low while checking how the other coupler temperature sensors read.
- With charging stopped and the connector safely disconnected, inspect sensor D's wiring for pinched insulation or contact with ground.
- Inspect the sensor D connector pins for corrosion, damage, moisture, or poor contact.
- Test the D signal wire for a short to ground and check the sensor itself using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure.
- After repairing the cause, verify that the D reading returns to a plausible range and that charging operates without the code.
Common fixes
- Repair a sensor D signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged sensor D connector terminals.
- Replace temperature sensor D if it is internally shorted.
- Clear the code and confirm the D signal is plausible during charging.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may restrict or stop charging because it cannot use the sensor D temperature signal reliably. Do not continue charging if the coupler is hot, damaged, or showing signs of arcing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
