What it means
The charging start switch reports a circuit condition. Charging initiation cannot be reliably commanded by the operator.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charging start switch tells the charging control system that the driver wants to begin charging. The module sets this general circuit code when the switch input or its wiring does not produce a dependable start request; this code does not identify a specific high, low, performance, or intermittent condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Switch failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Charging may not start when requested
- Charging may start unexpectedly or require repeated attempts
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch charging start-switch status on a scan tool while pressing and releasing the switch.
- Inspect the start switch, connector, and visible harness for damage, looseness, corrosion, or a switch that does not operate normally.
- Check the switch circuit connections and wiring using the manufacturer's wiring information, looking for opens, shorts, or poor contact.
- Test the start switch and circuit response against the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the wiring or replace the failed switch as indicated, then verify that the module recognizes a start request.
Common fixes
- Secure or clean a loose or corroded start-switch connector.
- Repair damaged wiring in the start-switch circuit.
- Replace a start switch that fails its operation or circuit test.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may not start reliably, so do not leave the vehicle unattended assuming a session has begun; confirm charging through the vehicle or charger indication. If charging starts unexpectedly, stop it using the approved control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
