What it means
The charging stop switch reports a circuit performance condition. Charging termination cannot be reliably commanded by the operator.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charging stop switch lets the driver request that a charging session end. The control module compares the switch signal with the expected response and sets this code when the circuit performs inconsistently, such as when aged contacts or a high-resistance connection prevent a reliable stop command.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Switch contacts aged
- High-resistance contact
Symptoms
- Charging may stop unreliably when requested
- Charging session may end unexpectedly
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and watch stop-switch status on a scan tool while repeatedly pressing and releasing the switch, noting delayed or inconsistent changes.
- With charging safely stopped, inspect the stop switch and connector for worn contacts, corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
- Check the harness and connector for high-resistance contact or damage, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Test switch continuity and circuit response through repeated operations against the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the poor connection or replace the faulty switch, then confirm that a stop request reliably ends charging.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a high-resistance or corroded connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or terminals in the stop-switch circuit.
- Replace a stop switch with worn contacts.
Can I keep driving?
The stop request may not work consistently, so monitor charging and have the approved alternative termination method available. Stop the session if it cannot be ended reliably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
