OBD-II fault code

P2D81: Charging Start Switch Circuit Performance

What it means

The charging start switch reports a circuit performance condition. Charging initiation cannot be reliably commanded by the operator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The charging start switch provides the driver's command to begin charging. The control module sets this code when the switch circuit does not meet expected performance, often because aged switch contacts or a high-resistance connection makes the start request unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contacts aged
  2. High-resistance contact

Symptoms

  • Charging may start unreliably when requested
  • Charging may not respond consistently to the switch

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and watch start-switch status on a scan tool during repeated presses, noting delayed or inconsistent recognition.
  2. Inspect the start switch and connector for worn contacts, corrosion, loose pins, or heat damage.
  3. Check the harness and connector for high-resistance contact or damage using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Test the switch and circuit response over repeated operations against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Repair the poor connection or replace the faulty switch, then confirm that the module consistently recognizes start requests.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a high-resistance or corroded connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals in the start-switch circuit.
  • Replace a start switch with aged or worn contacts.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may not begin consistently, so verify the vehicle or charger indicates an active session before leaving. Repeated attempts do not confirm that charging has started.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
