OBD-II fault code

P2D80: Charging Start Switch Circuit Low

What it means

The charging start switch reports a circuit low condition. Charging initiation cannot be reliably commanded by the operator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The charging start switch tells the control system when the driver wants charging to begin. This code sets when the module detects a low signal on the start-switch circuit, such as a signal wire shorted to ground or a switch that stays off, so charging may not respond to the request.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Switch stuck off
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charging may not start when requested
  • Charging may start intermittently or require repeated attempts

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor start-switch status on a scan tool while pressing and releasing the switch to check whether the request is recognized.
  2. Inspect the start switch, connector, and harness for a stuck-off switch, chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or damaged insulation.
  3. Using the manufacturer's wiring information, check the signal wire for a short to ground and inspect connector pins for excessive contact resistance.
  4. Test the switch and circuit response in both states against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Repair the short or poor connection, or replace the switch if it fails testing, then verify that charging starts on request.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose start-switch connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace a start switch that remains off or fails its circuit test.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start or may respond inconsistently, so confirm the charging indication before leaving the vehicle. Do not depend on a start request alone to verify that the battery is charging.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
