OBD-II fault code

P2D82: Charging Start Switch Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The charging start switch reports a circuit intermittent/erratic condition. Charging initiation cannot be reliably commanded by the operator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The charging start switch signals the control module to begin charging. This code indicates that the switch input is erratic or intermittently drops out, often because its connector is not seated, the ground reference is noisy, or vibration interrupts contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Charging may start intermittently or unpredictably
  • Charging may not respond consistently to the switch

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor start-switch status on a scan tool while operating the switch, looking for brief dropouts or unexpected changes.
  2. Inspect the start-switch connector for incomplete seating and check its pins and harness for looseness, corrosion, or vibration damage.
  3. Inspect and test the circuit ground reference and connector contact for instability using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. While monitoring the input, carefully move the harness and connector to check for intermittent signal changes.
  5. Repair the loose connection or unstable ground, then verify that the start request remains stable through repeated operations.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the start-switch connector.
  • Clean or repair loose, corroded, or damaged connector pins.
  • Repair a noisy or damaged ground connection.
  • Replace the switch if its signal remains erratic after circuit repairs.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may start unpredictably or fail to start, so check the charging indicator and monitor the session after requesting it. If an unwanted session begins, stop it using the approved control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
