OBD-II fault code

P28F3: Engine Disconnect Clutch Pressure Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the engine disconnect clutch pressure sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The engine disconnect clutch pressure sensor sends a signal voltage that the hybrid control module uses to estimate clutch engagement pressure. This code sets when the signal is below its expected window, often because the signal wire is grounded or the sensor is internally shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live pressure signal data and related codes to see whether the reading is persistently low or drops out.
  2. Inspect the pressure sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, trapped wiring, or contact with ground near the sensor.
  3. With power off as specified by the manufacturer, check the signal wire for a short to ground and verify connector continuity.
  4. Check the sensor ground, reference, and signal circuits against the manufacturer's wiring information, paying particular attention to corroded terminals.
  5. If the harness and connections pass, test the pressure sensor against the manufacturer's specification and replace it if internally shorted.

Common fixes

  • Clean corroded terminals and secure the pressure sensor connector.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged harness insulation.
  • Replace a pressure sensor that fails the manufacturer's electrical checks.

Can I keep driving?

A low signal can prevent reliable clutch pressure control, causing harsh or missing shifts and possible limp mode. Avoid heavy acceleration and stop driving if the transmission slips, shudders, or loses drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
