OBD-II fault code

P283A: Shift Fork B Position Circuit Intermittent

What it means

Shift fork B position signal drops out intermittently. Loose connector or vibration-sensitive wiring.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork B moves a transmission selector, and its position sensor lets the TCM track the fork during gear changes. P283A sets when the fork B position signal drops out intermittently, leaving the TCM without a consistent position reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Harness chafing intermittently shorts the wire
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check whether P283A is current or stored, then watch live fork B position data for dropouts under the recorded conditions.
  2. Inspect and reseat the fork B sensor connector, checking its lock, terminals, and seals for looseness, corrosion, or moisture.
  3. Trace the fork B harness for chafing, pinching, or damage that could interrupt the signal as the vehicle moves or vibrates.
  4. With the vehicle safely stationary and using the manufacturer's procedure, gently move the accessible connector and harness while monitoring the live signal.
  5. If the wiring stays stable, test the fork B position sensor and terminal contact under the manufacturer's specified conditions.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure a loose fork B sensor connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair poor terminal contact.
  • Repair chafed or vibration-sensitive wiring in the fork B circuit.
  • Replace the fork B position sensor if it drops out with sound wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

If missed shifts, slipping, or limp mode occur, avoid driving except to reach a safe stopping place because the TCM may lose track of fork B engagement. Arrange recovery if shifts are unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
