What it means
Shift fork D position signal drops out intermittently. Loose connector or vibration-sensitive wiring.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork D moves an internal transmission selector, while its position sensor lets the TCM track whether the fork reaches the commanded position. P2844 sets when the fork D position signal drops out intermittently, often as a loose connection or vibration-sensitive harness briefly interrupts it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector not seated
- Harness chafing intermittently shorts the wire
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review TCM fault status and fork D live position data to see whether the drop-out coincided with a shift or vehicle vibration.
- Inspect the fork D sensor connector for incomplete seating, loose terminals, corrosion, or signs that the harness has been pulled.
- Trace the fork D wiring for chafing or pinching, especially where it moves or passes near transmission components.
- Monitor fork D position data while gently moving the accessible harness and connector, following service precautions, to see whether the signal drops out.
- If the interruption is not visible in live data, test connector retention and signal continuity under the manufacturer's procedure before condemning the sensor.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and latch the fork D sensor connector.
- Clean corroded terminals and repair loose connector contacts.
- Repair chafed or intermittently open fork D wiring and secure it away from rubbing points.
- Replace the fork D position sensor if its output drops out while its wiring remains stable.
Can I keep driving?
Because the fault can return during a shift, avoid driving if the transmission slips, misses shifts, or enters limp mode; loss of fork D feedback can leave gear engagement uncertain. If it drives normally, limit use and arrange prompt diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
