OBD-II fault code

P2867: Shift Fork E Position Circuit Intermittent

What it means

Shift fork E position signal drops out intermittently. Loose connector or vibration-sensitive wiring.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The shift fork E position sensor reports the fork’s location to the transmission control module as the fork moves between gear positions. This code sets when that signal drops out intermittently, often because a loose connection or vibration-sensitive harness briefly breaks or disrupts the circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Harness chafing intermittently shorts the wire
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review any available fault history and live fork E position data for signal dropouts or changes that coincide with shifting.
  2. Inspect the fork E sensor plug for an incomplete latch, loose terminals, corrosion, or signs of movement at the connection.
  3. Follow the harness around the transmission and check for chafing, stretched sections, or insulation damage that could make intermittent contact.
  4. With the vehicle safely stationary, gently move the harness and connector while monitoring the sensor signal for dropouts; avoid moving parts and hot surfaces.
  5. If the connection and harness appear sound, test the sensor and circuit continuity while moving the harness, using the manufacturer's test procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the connector latch and clean or repair terminals with poor contact.
  • Repair chafed or stretched wiring in the fork E sensor harness.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal that loses contact under vibration.
  • Replace the position sensor if its output drops out during the specified movement test.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as far as needed to reach a safe place for diagnosis; the intermittent fork E signal can cause sudden shift problems or limp mode. Avoid high speeds and heavy loads, and stop if the transmission loses gear engagement or begins slipping.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
