What it means
Shift fork B position sensor reports a value outside the calibrated travel window. Mechanical alignment off or sensor drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork B moves a transmission selector, and its position sensor reports the fork's travel to the TCM. P2837 sets when that reported position falls outside the calibrated travel range, even if the signal circuit itself is not simply low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor zero point drifted
- Fork shaft worn
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded fork B movement with live position readings to identify when the reading leaves its calibrated range.
- Inspect the fork B sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could distort the reported position.
- Check whether the live fork B reading changes smoothly and consistently through available gear selections, using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- Inspect accessible fork B shaft and selector components for wear, binding, or signs of misalignment that could keep the fork outside its expected travel.
- If the mechanism moves freely and the wiring is sound, test the fork B sensor calibration and output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Correct poor connector contact or repair damaged fork B sensor wiring.
- Repair worn or misaligned fork B selector or shaft components, as confirmed by inspection.
- Replace the fork B position sensor if its zero point or output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Perform any required sensor calibration or adaptation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if gear changes are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; fork B may not be reaching or reporting the expected selector position. Stop and arrange recovery if the vehicle cannot engage gears reliably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
