What it means
The TCM cannot read a valid position signal from shift fork C position sensor. Selector engagement state is unknown.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork C moves a selector inside the transmission to engage a gear, and its position sensor tells the TCM where the fork is. P283B sets when the TCM cannot read a valid position signal from the fork C circuit, leaving the engagement state uncertain.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and read live fork C position data along with related transmission faults to see whether the signal is absent, implausible, or fails during shifts.
- Inspect the fork C sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, damaged insulation, or poor terminal contact.
- Check the fork C sensor power, ground, and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Test the fork C circuit for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure, disconnecting modules only as specified.
- If the wiring and connector pass, test the fork C position sensor and confirm its output changes as the fork moves.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the fork C sensor connector and correct poor terminal contact.
- Repair damaged wiring or an open/short in the fork C circuit.
- Replace the fork C position sensor if it produces an invalid signal despite a sound circuit.
- Repair the connector if its terminals cannot maintain reliable contact.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are missing, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode, because the TCM may not know whether fork C has engaged the selected gear. If gear engagement is unreliable, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
