What it means
Voltage on shift fork B position sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork B moves a selector inside the transmission to engage a gear, and its position sensor reports that movement to the TCM. The TCM sets P2838 when the fork B signal voltage falls below its expected range, preventing a dependable position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and compare live fork B position data with commanded movement to see when the low signal occurs.
- Inspect the fork B sensor connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, damaged pins, or wiring rubbed through to ground.
- Check the sensor's power and ground connections against the manufacturer's specification.
- Use the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure to measure the fork B signal and check for a short to ground.
- If the circuit is intact, test the fork B sensor and its output as the fork moves against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose fork B sensor connector terminals.
- Repair a fork B signal wire shorted to ground or a damaged harness section.
- Replace the fork B position sensor if it continues to produce a low output with sound wiring.
- Repair connector terminals that cannot maintain reliable contact.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; it may be limited to one gear and continued use can worsen transmission damage. If it cannot shift predictably, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
