What it means
Shift fork C position sensor reports a value outside the calibrated travel window. Mechanical alignment off or sensor drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork C moves a transmission selector, and its position sensor reports the fork's travel to the TCM. P283C sets when the reported fork C position is outside the calibrated travel range, which can point to sensor drift or a mechanical travel problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor zero point drifted
- Fork shaft worn
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded fork C movement with live position readings to identify when the reading leaves its expected range.
- Inspect the fork C sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could skew the position signal.
- Monitor whether the fork C reading changes smoothly and consistently through gear selections, following the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- Inspect accessible fork C shaft and selector parts for wear, binding, or misalignment that could limit or alter fork travel.
- If movement and wiring are sound, test the fork C sensor output and calibration against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Correct poor connector contact or repair damaged fork C sensor wiring.
- Repair worn or misaligned fork C selector or shaft components identified during inspection.
- Replace the fork C position sensor if its output or zero point is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Perform any required sensor calibration or adaptation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if gear changes are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; fork C may not reach or report the expected selector position. Stop and arrange recovery if the vehicle cannot engage gears reliably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
