What it means
Voltage on shift fork A position sensor signal line is above the expected window. Wire shorted to B+ or sensor open.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork A moves a selector inside the transmission to engage a gear, and its position sensor reports that movement to the TCM. P2834 sets when the fork A signal voltage rises above its expected range, which can leave the TCM unable to verify fork A's position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and monitor live fork A position data with a scan tool to see whether the high signal is current and what the transmission was doing when it occurred.
- Inspect the fork A sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or contact with a power feed.
- Check the sensor's supply, ground, and signal wiring against the manufacturer's specification.
- Using the wiring diagram and prescribed procedure, test whether the fork A signal is shorted to battery voltage or another power source.
- If the harness checks out, test the fork A sensor for an open circuit or an implausibly high output, following the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose fork A sensor connector terminals.
- Repair a fork A signal wire shorted to a power feed.
- Repair an open or damaged section of the fork A sensor circuit.
- Replace the fork A position sensor if it tests open or produces an out-of-range high signal.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode, since it may lock into one gear and shifting faults can worsen. If gear engagement is unpredictable, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
