What it means
The TCM cannot read a valid position signal from shift fork B position sensor. Selector engagement state is unknown.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift fork B moves a selector inside the transmission to engage a gear, and its position sensor sends the TCM information about that movement. P2836 sets when the TCM cannot obtain a valid position signal from the fork B circuit, leaving fork B's engagement state uncertain.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and read live fork B position data and related transmission faults to establish whether the signal is absent, implausible, or failing only during shifts.
- Inspect the fork B sensor connector and harness for loose or corroded terminals, damaged insulation, and poor connections.
- Check the fork B sensor's power, ground, and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Test continuity and shorts in the fork B circuit using the manufacturer's procedure, with the relevant modules disconnected if specified.
- If the circuit and connector pass, test the fork B position sensor and confirm that its output changes as the fork moves.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the fork B sensor connector and correct poor terminal contact.
- Repair damaged wiring or an open/short in the fork B circuit.
- Replace the fork B position sensor if its signal is invalid despite a sound circuit.
- Repair the connector if its terminals cannot maintain a reliable connection.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are missing, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode, because the TCM may not know whether fork B has engaged the selected gear. If gear engagement is unreliable, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
