OBD-II fault code

P2832: Shift Fork A Position Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

Shift fork A position sensor reports a value outside the calibrated travel window. Mechanical alignment off or sensor drift.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork A moves a transmission selector to engage a gear, and its position sensor tells the TCM how far the fork has travelled. This code sets when the reported position falls outside the calibrated travel range, even if the sensor circuit still produces a signal. Sensor drift, a worn fork shaft, or incorrect mechanical alignment can put the reading outside that window.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor zero point drifted
  2. Fork shaft worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then check live data to see whether shift fork A reports a position beyond its expected travel window.
  2. Inspect the shift fork A sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could distort its signal.
  3. Check the sensor signal and circuit against the manufacturer’s specifications across the commanded travel range.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s procedure to verify shift fork A sensor calibration or zero point, if the vehicle supports that check.
  5. If the electrical signal and calibration are correct, inspect the fork shaft and selector mechanism for wear, binding, or misalignment.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged shift fork A sensor connector or wiring.
  • Calibrate the sensor zero point if the manufacturer’s procedure identifies drift and provides for adjustment.
  • Replace the shift fork A position sensor if its signal remains outside the specified range.
  • Repair worn or misaligned fork shaft or selector components affecting shift fork A travel.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid high-speed trips because the TCM may misjudge shift fork A travel, leading to missed shifts, shudder, or limp mode. Stop if the transmission cannot engage or hold a gear reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
