OBD-II fault code

P2833: Shift Fork A Position Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on shift fork A position sensor signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork A moves a selector inside the transmission to engage a gear, and its position sensor reports that movement to the transmission control module (TCM). The TCM sets P2833 when the fork A signal voltage falls below its expected range, so it cannot reliably confirm fork A's position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare live fork A position data with commanded movement; this shows when the signal fell low and whether the fault is present now.
  2. Inspect the fork A sensor connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, pin damage, or wiring rubbed through to ground.
  3. Check the sensor's power and ground connections against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the sensor.
  4. With the circuit diagram, measure the fork A signal and check for a short to ground, following the manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the fork A sensor and its signal response as the fork moves, using the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose fork A sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a fork A signal wire shorted to ground or damaged harness section.
  • Replace the faulty fork A position sensor if its output remains low with sound wiring.
  • Repair the connector or terminal that prevents reliable contact.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; the vehicle may be limited to one gear and continued operation can worsen transmission damage. If it cannot shift predictably, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
