OBD-II fault code

P2822: Pressure Control Solenoid J Electrical

What it means

The TCM detects an electrical fault on transmission pressure control solenoid J. Hydraulic pressure cannot be modulated as expected, causing harsh or slipping shifts.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid J is an electrically operated valve that lets the TCM regulate transmission hydraulic pressure. This code sets when the TCM detects an electrical fault in solenoid J’s circuit, so pressure may not respond as expected and shifts may become harsh or slip.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal solenoid fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may slip or hesitate
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related transmission codes to identify whether solenoid J’s electrical fault occurred with other circuit faults.
  2. Inspect the solenoid J connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, loose terminals, or transmission-fluid intrusion.
  3. Check solenoid J coil resistance and continuity using the vehicle maker’s test procedure, comparing results with the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Test the circuit between the TCM and solenoid J for shorts, opens, and unwanted resistance, isolating the solenoid and module as directed by the service information.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, check TCM control output and verify the hydraulic response to solenoid J’s commands.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the solenoid J connector or repair damaged terminals.
  • Repair open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring in the solenoid J circuit.
  • Replace solenoid J if its coil fails the specified electrical checks.
  • Repair the TCM or valve-body fault if testing confirms it is preventing proper control.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing and strenuous driving, and stop if the transmission slips or cannot maintain a gear. Continued driving with uncontrolled pressure can overheat or damage internal transmission parts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
