What it means
The TCM detects an electrical fault on transmission pressure control solenoid L. Hydraulic pressure cannot be modulated as expected, causing harsh or slipping shifts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid L is an electrically controlled valve that lets the TCM adjust transmission hydraulic pressure. P08BD sets when the TCM detects an electrical fault in L’s circuit, so the solenoid may not regulate pressure as commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal solenoid fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Scan for related transmission codes and review freeze-frame data and solenoid L command information to identify when the electrical fault occurred.
- Inspect the solenoid L connector and harness for loose or corroded pins, fluid intrusion, chafing, or other visible damage.
- Check the solenoid L coil and circuit continuity using the vehicle’s wiring diagram and compare results with the manufacturer’s specification.
- Check for a short or open between the TCM and solenoid L, including connector pin fit and harness movement where damage is suspected.
- If wiring and solenoid tests pass, follow the manufacturer’s procedure to check the TCM driver and its control of solenoid L.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the solenoid L connector if its terminals are intact.
- Repair damaged or corroded wiring in the solenoid L circuit.
- Replace pressure control solenoid L if its coil fails specification.
- Repair the TCM driver only if circuit tests confirm the module is not controlling solenoid L correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; pressure may not be controlled correctly and continued slipping can cause damage. Have the electrical fault diagnosed promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
