What it means
The TCM detects an electrical fault on transmission pressure control solenoid D. Hydraulic pressure cannot be modulated as expected, causing harsh or slipping shifts.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid D is an electrically controlled valve that lets the TCM regulate transmission hydraulic pressure. The module monitors the solenoid D control circuit and sets P2716 when it detects an electrical fault that prevents reliable control. This can leave pressure poorly regulated and lead to harsh or slipping shifts.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal solenoid fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light may be on
- Harsh, delayed, or slipping shifts
- Transmission may enter a reduced-function mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for solenoid D command and any circuit or current readings the scan tool provides.
- Inspect the solenoid D connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, fluid contamination, or damaged insulation.
- Check the solenoid D coil and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's test procedure and compare readings with its specification.
- If the wiring and coil pass, check the control side of the circuit for an incorrect output before suspecting the TCM.
- Replace or open the valve body for further inspection only after the electrical fault has been isolated.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the solenoid D connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Replace solenoid D if its coil fails the manufacturer's electrical checks.
- Repair a confirmed circuit fault between the TCM and solenoid D.
- Repair or replace the TCM only if testing confirms its output driver is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Because this fault can trigger reduced-function mode and unpredictable shifts, avoid unnecessary driving, towing, and high-speed travel. If the transmission slips or cannot maintain a gear, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
