What it means
The transmission control module detects an electrical fault associated with pressure control solenoid S.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid S is an electrically operated valve that helps regulate transmission hydraulic pressure. The transmission control module monitors its electrical circuit and sets P27D3 when it detects an electrical fault without specifying a low, high, open, or intermittent condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty solenoid coil
- Open or short in solenoid wiring
- Poor connector contact
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check related codes to see when the solenoid S electrical fault occurred.
- Inspect solenoid S's connector and wiring for loose contacts, corrosion, damaged insulation, or a possible open or short.
- Check that the connector is fully seated and its terminals make firm contact.
- Measure solenoid S coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to check for a faulty coil.
- Test the solenoid S control wiring for continuity and shorts using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- If the coil and wiring pass, compare commanded solenoid S operation with available scan-tool circuit data and assess the module-side circuit.
Common fixes
- Secure the solenoid S connector and clean or repair poor terminal contact.
- Repair damaged wiring in the solenoid S control circuit.
- Replace solenoid S if its coil is open, shorted, or outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the control circuit if testing identifies a fault beyond the connector, wiring, or solenoid.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, heavy acceleration, and long trips if shifts are harsh or delayed, or limp mode is active. An electrical fault can interrupt solenoid S pressure control and lead to worsening shift problems or transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
