OBD-II fault code

P2736: Pressure Control Solenoid F Control Circuit / Open

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the control circuit for pressure control solenoid F. This code sets when the circuit is open, interrupting the electrical path needed to operate the solenoid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The TCM controls pressure control solenoid F through an electrical circuit, and the solenoid uses that signal to regulate transmission pressure. P2736 sets when the circuit is open, interrupting the path needed to operate solenoid F.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open solenoid coil
  2. Broken control wire

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Slipping or reduced drive
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes before clearing anything, to identify when the solenoid F circuit opened.
  2. Check fluid level and condition according to the vehicle maker's procedure, and note whether shift symptoms began with the code.
  3. Inspect the solenoid F connector and harness for a disconnected plug, broken wire, pulled pin, corrosion, or fluid entry.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test continuity through the solenoid F control circuit and check for an open between the TCM and solenoid.
  5. Measure solenoid F coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open coil.
  6. If the solenoid and wiring are intact, check the TCM connector and output for a break in the circuit.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the solenoid F plug or repair loose terminals.
  • Repair a broken solenoid F control wire or damaged harness section.
  • Replace solenoid F if its coil is open.
  • Repair the TCM connector or output circuit if testing locates the open there.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving far if shifts are harsh, delayed, or slipping; the transmission may have reduced drive or enter a restricted mode. Stop if it loses drive or cannot shift predictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
