OBD-II fault code

P2020: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Range/Performance (Bank 2)

What it means

The intake manifold runner position sensor or switch signal on bank 2 is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 2 IMRC position sensor or switch reports where the intake runners are, allowing the control module to compare actual position with expected operation. P2020 sets when the signal is outside its expected range or behaves implausibly; a short to ground, sensor fault, or high-resistance corroded connection can cause that signal problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Sensor element shorted
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible reduced engine performance
  • Possible rough running or hesitation

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and watch bank 2 commanded and reported runner position on a scan tool to see when the signal becomes implausible.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector for corrosion or loose pins and the signal wire for damage or contact with ground.
  3. Check the bank 2 sensor ground and signal circuit for continuity or unintended shorts using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. Move the runner through its range with a scan tool and observe whether the bank 2 position signal changes smoothly and consistently.
  5. Test the sensor and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a failed sensor from wiring resistance or a short.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 2 sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a bank 2 signal wire shorted to ground or otherwise damaged.
  • Restore a sound sensor ground or repair a high-resistance connection.
  • Replace the bank 2 position sensor if it fails testing with its wiring and ground verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, gentle driving is usually possible, but reduced performance or hesitation may make acceleration less predictable. Avoid hard acceleration and arrange repair soon because inaccurate bank 2 runner feedback can affect engine response and emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
