What it means
Internal self-diagnostics of the IMRC actuator on bank 2 report an off-spec condition — driver stage, position-feedback or thermal limit no longer matches the calibrated profile.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 IMRC actuator moves the intake manifold runners and uses internal drive and position-feedback components to track the requested setting. P201E sets when the actuator's own performance checks detect that its operation is outside the expected profile, including possible motor, feedback, or overheating problems.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal actuator fault
- Actuator motor or position sensor failure
- Actuator overheating
- Connector or wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Hesitation or uneven engine response
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan for other IMRC or voltage codes that may explain the bank 2 actuator complaint.
- Inspect the bank 2 actuator connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or signs of overheating.
- Check the bank 2 runner linkage and flap for binding that could cause the actuator to stall or heat up.
- Use a scan tool to command bank 2 runner movement and compare commanded position with feedback and actuator status.
- Verify bank 2 actuator power, ground, and feedback circuits against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the actuator.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged bank 2 actuator connector or wiring fault.
- Remove an obstruction or carbon buildup that is binding the bank 2 runner linkage.
- Correct a confirmed bank 2 actuator power or ground problem.
- Replace the bank 2 IMRC actuator if its motor or internal position feedback fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, drive gently only as needed for diagnosis; reduced power or hesitation may affect acceleration. Avoid hard acceleration and address the fault soon because bank 2 runner control and emissions can remain impaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
