OBD-II fault code

P2023: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2)

What it means

The IMRC position sensor signal on bank 2 jumps or drops out intermittently — usually a loose pin, partially-broken conductor, or moisture in the connector.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) changes the intake airflow path, and its position sensor reports the runner position to the engine control module. P2023 sets when the Bank 2 position signal cuts in and out intermittently, so the module cannot reliably track the runner.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose terminal in connector
  2. Water ingress into connector
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible intermittent loss of engine performance
  • Possible hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and watch the Bank 2 IMRC position signal while moving the harness gently to see whether it drops out.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 runner sensor connector for moisture, loose fit, pushed-back pins, corrosion, or damaged seals.
  3. Check the Bank 2 sensor wiring for chafing, broken strands, or places where vibration could interrupt contact.
  4. With the circuit disconnected as specified by the manufacturer, check terminal fit and continuity while flexing the harness.
  5. If wiring and terminals pass, compare the Bank 2 sensor output with runner movement and the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Dry and secure the Bank 2 IMRC sensor connector and repair its seal if needed.
  • Repair a loose or damaged connector terminal.
  • Repair the intermittently open or chafed Bank 2 sensor wiring.
  • Replace the Bank 2 runner position sensor if its signal still drops out with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, a short, gentle drive may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration if hesitation or power loss occurs. Continued signal dropouts can impair intake control and lead to rough running.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
