OBD-II fault code

P2019: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Range/Performance (Bank 2)

What it means

The IMRC position sensor on bank 2 produces an electrically valid signal that does not match the commanded runner state — typically a sensor drift or sticking flap.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake manifold runner control (IMRC) changes the airflow path through the intake on bank 2 to suit engine operating conditions. The module compares the bank 2 runner position sensor signal with the commanded position; P2019 sets when the signal is electrically valid but the reported movement or position does not match what is expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor drift
  2. Carbon buildup blocks flap travel
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Hesitation or uneven engine response

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported bank 2 runner positions under the conditions that set the code.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 runner linkage and flap for binding, damage, or carbon buildup that could prevent the commanded movement.
  3. Check the bank 2 position sensor connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage that could distort its signal.
  4. With the scan tool, command the runners through their range and watch whether the bank 2 position reading follows smoothly and consistently.
  5. If the linkage moves freely but the feedback remains inaccurate, test the bank 2 sensor and circuit against the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sensor or actuator.

Common fixes

  • Remove carbon deposits that are restricting bank 2 runner flap movement.
  • Repair damaged or poorly connected bank 2 sensor wiring or connector terminals.
  • Replace a bank 2 position sensor that fails testing or remains out of calibration.
  • Replace a faulty bank 2 runner actuator if it cannot move the flap correctly despite a free linkage.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but sluggish acceleration or hesitation may make merging and overtaking less predictable. Avoid hard acceleration and address the fault soon because incorrect runner operation can reduce performance and increase emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
