What it means
The IMRC position sensor on bank 1 reports a value, but it does not match the commanded flap state — for example, the flap is commanded closed yet the sensor still reads open. Common on engines where the connector pin clip wears out and the sensor reads erratic positions.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake manifold runner position sensor on bank 1 reports whether that bank's runner flaps match the position commanded by the control module. P2015 sets when the signal is present but falls outside the expected range or does not track the commanded position, which can happen if the connector contact is intermittent, the flap sticks, or the sensor has drifted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector clip worn — intermittent contact
- Flap sticking due to carbon
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Hesitation or uneven engine response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live bank 1 commanded and reported runner positions to identify when they disagree.
- Inspect the bank 1 sensor connector and retaining clip for looseness or worn contact, and check the harness for damage.
- With live data displayed, gently move the accessible harness and connector to see whether the bank 1 position reading jumps or drops out.
- Command the bank 1 runners through their range, if supported, and check whether the mechanism sticks or the sensor reading lags.
- Test the sensor signal and runner movement against the manufacturer's specification before deciding which component needs replacement.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair the worn bank 1 sensor connector clip and any intermittent terminals.
- Clean carbon from the bank 1 runner mechanism if deposits are making the flaps stick.
- Replace the bank 1 position sensor if its output is outside the specified range despite free runner movement.
- Repair or replace a damaged runner linkage that prevents the flaps from following commands.
Can I keep driving?
Gentle driving is usually possible if the engine remains smooth, but bank 1 runner position errors can cause hesitation or reduced acceleration. Avoid hard acceleration and address the fault soon if the readings or symptoms are intermittent.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
