What it means
The IMRC position sensor signal on bank 1 reads above the upper limit. Typically a short to supply, an open ground reference, or a sensor that failed high.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake manifold runner position sensor on bank 1 reports runner-flap position to the control module. P2017 sets when the sensor signal rises above the expected upper limit, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to supply, the sensor ground is open, or the sensor has failed high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to supply
- Sensor ground open
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Hesitation or uneven engine response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live bank 1 runner-position readings to confirm the signal is high or fixed.
- Inspect the bank 1 sensor connector, signal wire, and ground reference for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or a disconnected ground.
- Using the wiring diagram, check the signal line for a short to supply and test continuity through the sensor ground.
- Verify sensor power and ground, then measure the signal against the manufacturer's specification.
- If wiring and sensor checks pass, observe whether bank 1 position feedback changes as the runners move before diagnosing the control module.
Common fixes
- Repair a bank 1 position-sensor signal wire shorted to supply.
- Restore the open sensor ground or repair its connector terminal.
- Clean or secure corroded or loose bank 1 sensor connections.
- Replace the bank 1 position sensor if its output remains above specification with correct wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Gentle driving is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, but bank 1 runner position feedback may be unreliable and acceleration may suffer. Avoid hard acceleration and stop if the engine runs poorly or misfires.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
