What it means
A fault has been detected in the intake manifold runner position sensor or switch circuit on bank 2. The code does not specify that the circuit is open.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake manifold runner position sensor or switch on bank 2 reports the position of that bank's runner flaps to the control module. P2018 indicates a fault in that feedback circuit, but does not by itself specify whether the circuit is open, shorted, or otherwise faulty.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor element open
- Signal wire open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
- Hesitation or uneven engine response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live bank 2 runner-position readings, if available, to see whether feedback is missing or intermittent.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, a loose fit, or a damaged lock, and check the harness for an open wire.
- With the wiring diagram, test continuity through the bank 2 sensor signal, power, and ground circuits.
- Check sensor supply and ground, then compare its signal while the bank 2 runners move with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and sensor pass, inspect the bank 2 runner linkage and verify that the position signal changes as commanded.
Common fixes
- Reseat the pushed-back bank 2 sensor pin and repair damaged connector terminals.
- Repair an open wire in the bank 2 position-sensor harness.
- Clean or secure corroded or loose bank 2 sensor connections.
- Replace the bank 2 position sensor if it fails the specified signal test.
- Repair a disconnected runner linkage if the sensor cannot track flap movement.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, though bank 2 runner position may be uncontrolled and acceleration may be reduced. Avoid hard acceleration and have the circuit checked soon if hesitation or power loss worsens.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
