What it means
The hybrid/EV battery temperature sensor F signal is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Temperature sensor F reports a portion of the hybrid/EV battery's temperature to the control module. The module checks whether that signal is plausible and changes as expected with battery temperature. P0C34 sets when sensor F's reading is out of range or behaves abnormally, rather than simply indicating a low or high circuit voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty temperature sensor
- Sensor wiring or connector fault
- Sensor incorrectly positioned
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to compare sensor F with neighboring battery temperature sensors under similar conditions.
- Inspect sensor F's connector, harness routing, and mounting position for damage, looseness, or a sensor displaced from its intended location.
- Check the sensor F wiring for poor connections, opens, or shorts using the vehicle wiring diagram.
- Test sensor F response as battery temperature changes, following the manufacturer's procedure and specifications.
- Correct the mounting or circuit fault, or replace sensor F if its response remains implausible, then recheck live data.
Common fixes
- Reposition and secure sensor F if it is loose or incorrectly seated.
- Clean or repair a poor sensor F connector connection.
- Repair damaged sensor F wiring.
- Replace sensor F if it fails the specified response test.
Can I keep driving?
Limit rapid charging and strenuous driving until sensor F's implausible reading is resolved, since the control system may restrict battery use or miss a developing hot spot. Stop safely if the vehicle shows a battery temperature warning or enters reduced-power operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
