What it means
The ECM detects a circuit range/performance fault on the hybrid/ev battery temperature sensor c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery temperature sensor C measures temperature at one location in the hybrid or EV battery pack. The control system checks whether its reading is plausible and consistent with operating conditions; this code sets when sensor C's signal is within an electrically possible range but behaves outside the expected range or performance pattern.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare sensor C with the other battery temperature readings and the pack's operating conditions.
- Inspect sensor C's connector, wiring, and mounting for looseness, damage, or displacement that could affect its reading.
- With the vehicle in a stable condition, watch sensor C live data for implausible jumps or disagreement with nearby pack sensors.
- Check the sensor C circuit and sensor response using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the sensor and wiring test correctly, check for related battery control module codes and verify module inputs.
Common fixes
- Secure sensor C in its correct mounting position.
- Repair a loose or damaged connector or wiring.
- Replace sensor C if its readings drift outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair or replace the battery control module if testing confirms it is misreading the sensor.
Can I keep driving?
Limit hard acceleration, heavy loads, and fast charging because battery power or charging may be restricted when sensor C's reading is implausible. Arrange diagnosis soon, especially if the vehicle enters reduced-power mode or charging is limited.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
