What it means
The hybrid/EV battery cooling system is not providing the expected cooling performance. The code does not specify a particular pump, radiator, or other component.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid/EV battery cooling system removes heat from the traction battery, using airflow or coolant depending on the vehicle. The control module checks whether the system is cooling the battery as expected. P0C32 sets when measured cooling performance falls short, but does not identify a particular failed part.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low coolant or restricted coolant flow, if liquid-cooled
- Faulty cooling pump or fan
- Cooling passage obstruction
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Check the freeze-frame and battery temperature data to see when cooling performance fell short and whether battery temperature was rising.
- Inspect the battery cooling air inlets and outlets for blockage, and check any accessible ducts for debris or damage.
- If the vehicle uses liquid cooling, check the reservoir level and look for leaks or signs of restricted flow, following the vehicle's safety procedures.
- Use scan-tool data to check whether the cooling pump and fans are commanded on and whether their operation changes with battery temperature.
- If airflow or coolant flow appears inadequate, test the relevant pump, fan, and passages against the manufacturer's procedures and specifications.
Common fixes
- Remove debris blocking battery cooling air inlets or outlets.
- Restore coolant to the specified level and repair any leak, if liquid-cooled.
- Repair a restricted or damaged cooling passage.
- Replace a cooling pump or fan that fails its specified operation test.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, steep climbs, and rapid charging while the warning is active, since excess battery heat can trigger reduced power or worsen battery stress. If power is limited or the battery temperature warning appears, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
