What it means
The signal from hybrid battery temperature sensor E is outside its expected range or performance criteria. The code does not by itself identify the failed component.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Hybrid battery temperature sensor E measures pack temperature for the battery control system. P0BC3 sets when sensor E’s signal falls outside expected range or performance criteria, which can reflect an implausible reading even if the circuit is not fully open or shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor or wiring/connector fault
- Sensor improperly positioned
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live sensor E readings, comparing them with other battery sensors and ambient conditions to spot an implausible value or unexpected change.
- With the vehicle powered down under the manufacturer’s high-voltage safety procedure, inspect sensor E’s mounting position, connector seating, and harness condition.
- Check whether sensor E is positioned as specified by the manufacturer, since poor contact with its intended measurement point can skew readings.
- Test sensor E and its wiring for the range or response problem using the manufacturer’s specified procedure.
- If the sensor and installation pass, check the battery control module input and related circuit using the manufacturer’s diagnostic flow.
Common fixes
- Position and secure sensor E as specified by the manufacturer.
- Reseat the sensor E connector and repair poor contacts.
- Repair damaged sensor E wiring.
- Replace sensor E if its readings fail the specified range or response test.
- Repair the battery control module input if the sensor and wiring test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and charging until sensor E reports a plausible temperature, as the system may limit power or charging to protect the pack. Stop if a battery temperature warning appears or the vehicle enters reduced-power mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
