OBD-II fault code

P0AE9: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor D Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit range/performance fault on the hybrid/ev battery temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery temperature sensor D measures the temperature of a monitored area of the hybrid or EV battery pack. The control module checks whether its signal behaves as expected for operating conditions; this code sets when the sensor D circuit is electrically present but its reading falls outside the expected range or response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live battery temperature readings to see the conditions under which sensor D became implausible.
  2. Compare sensor D with nearby battery temperature sensors during a cold start and as the pack warms to spot an outlier or a reading that changes too slowly.
  3. Power down the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer, then inspect sensor D's mounting, connector, and wiring for displacement, damage, or poor contact.
  4. Check the sensor D signal and circuit continuity against the manufacturer's wiring information to distinguish a circuit fault from a drifting sensor.
  5. Test sensor D's response and mounting against the manufacturer's specification, and check for related battery pack faults.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor D in its specified position.
  • Clean or repair a poor sensor D connector or damaged wiring.
  • Replace sensor D if its response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair any confirmed battery pack fault affecting the sensor's readings.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if the vehicle remains stable and gives no stop or battery warning; avoid heavy acceleration and charging if either is restricted. A misleading temperature reading can cause reduced power or charging and may lead to a shutdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
