What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel Z of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system (BMS) reads cell-group voltage through sense channel Z to track the high-voltage pack. P0BBA sets when that channel’s signal is too low, so the BMS cannot rely on its voltage reading for that group.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and BMS live data for channel Z to see when its reading drops and how it compares with other battery groups.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer’s safety procedure, inspect the channel Z sense-wire connectors for corrosion, damage, or a pin that is not seated.
- Check the channel Z sense wire and its routing for a short to ground or damaged insulation.
- Measure the channel Z circuit and ground path using the manufacturer’s procedure to distinguish a grounded wire from an open or high-resistance connection.
- If wiring and connections pass, follow the manufacturer’s battery-monitoring tests to assess the sensing input and BMS.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the channel Z connector.
- Clean or repair corroded channel Z connector contacts.
- Repair or replace a channel Z sense wire that is shorted to ground or open.
- Repair the BMS sensing circuit if wiring and contacts test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and long trips; the vehicle may limit power or charging because it cannot reliably monitor channel Z. Stop driving if power drops sharply or a high-voltage battery warning appears, and arrange diagnosis using the manufacturer’s safety procedures.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
