OBD-II fault code

P0BA4: Hybrid Battery Voltage Sense "V" Circuit

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel V of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS uses voltage sense channel V to monitor a cell group in the hybrid battery pack. This code reports a general circuit fault on channel V, so the group voltage measurement cannot be trusted; wiring, the sensing path, or an unusually imbalanced group may need investigation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense circuit failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare channel V's reported voltage with neighboring cell-group readings to look for a missing or unusually different value.
  2. With the vehicle powered down under the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the channel V sense wiring and accessible connector for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
  3. Check channel V connector pin fit and condition, since a poor connection can interrupt the measurement.
  4. Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel V wiring and the sensing path for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit passes, review pack cell-group balance and test the battery monitoring module's channel V input against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a loose channel V connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded channel V connector pins.
  • Repair or replace channel V sense wiring found open, shorted, or damaged.
  • Service an out-of-balance cell group or replace the battery monitoring module only when the manufacturer's tests confirm the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed if the vehicle remains controllable, and avoid hard acceleration because the system may reduce power or enter limp mode; charging can also be limited. Stop if a battery safety warning appears and arrange prompt hybrid-system diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
