What it means
The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel O of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system uses sense channel O to measure the voltage of a battery cell group. P0B81 indicates a general electrical fault in that channel's circuit, so the BMS cannot rely on the group-voltage measurement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or short in the voltage-sense wiring
- Loose, corroded, or damaged connection
- Battery monitoring module fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel O's live voltage with nearby cell-group readings to see whether it is missing, implausible, or changing with operating conditions.
- Check for charging failure, reduced range, or limited propulsion and note whether those symptoms began with the channel O fault.
- With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, inspect channel O's accessible wiring and connectors for loose fit, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel O wiring for an open or short using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the harness and connections pass, compare the measured group voltage with the battery monitoring module's channel O input to distinguish a module fault.
Common fixes
- Repair an open or short in channel O voltage-sense wiring.
- Clean, secure, or replace loose or corroded channel O connector terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector seals that allow moisture into channel O.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module if channel O's input is faulty with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and do not count on normal electric range or charging while the BMS cannot verify channel O. If propulsion is substantially limited or additional high-voltage warnings appear, stop safely and arrange qualified hybrid service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
