What it means
The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel P of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system uses sense channel P to measure the voltage of one battery cell group. P0B86 indicates a general circuit fault on channel P, making that group's voltage reading unreliable to the BMS.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or short in the voltage-sense wiring
- Loose, corroded, or damaged connection
- Battery monitoring module fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare channel P's live voltage with adjacent cell-group readings to determine whether the signal is missing or implausible.
- Check for charging problems, reduced electric range, or limited power and note when they began relative to the channel P fault.
- With the high-voltage battery safely isolated under the vehicle's service procedure, inspect channel P wiring and connectors for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel P wiring for an open or short following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and connections pass, compare the measured group voltage with the battery monitoring module's channel P input to determine whether the module is at fault.
Common fixes
- Repair an open or short in channel P voltage-sense wiring.
- Secure or replace loose, corroded, or damaged channel P connector terminals.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector seals that could compromise channel P.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module if its channel P input is faulty with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and expect that charging or electric propulsion may be limited while the BMS cannot verify channel P. If power is severely reduced or further high-voltage warnings appear, stop safely and arrange qualified hybrid service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
