What it means
The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel X of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS uses channel X to measure the voltage of a particular high-voltage battery cell group. P0BAE reports a general fault in the X sense circuit, making that group’s voltage reading unreliable without specifying whether the fault is a wiring failure or an approaching cell imbalance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense circuit failed
- Wiring fault
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live channel X voltage with neighboring channels for a missing, implausible, or persistently different reading.
- Inspect the X sense harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, moisture, or overheating.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle procedure, test the X sense circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connector contact.
- Review BMS data for the X cell-group reading alongside adjacent groups during charging and vehicle operation.
- Compare the circuit and cell-group results with the manufacturer's specification to distinguish an X wiring fault, sensing input problem, or battery group imbalance.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the channel X connector.
- Clean or repair damaged or corroded X circuit terminals.
- Repair an open, short, or other wiring fault in the X sense circuit.
- Have the X battery group and BMS input assessed if the reading remains implausible with sound wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid long trips and heavy acceleration because the BMS may limit power or charging when channel X cannot provide a reliable group reading. If power becomes severely limited or the hybrid warning escalates, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
