What it means
The BMS detects a circuit range/performance fault on voltage sense channel A of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Voltage sense channel A measures a cell group's voltage in the high-voltage battery for the battery management system. P0B3C sets when channel A's reading is outside the expected range or fails to track plausibly, which can reflect drift or resistance in its connections rather than a confirmed cell failure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense voltage drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare channel A's scan-tool reading with other cell-group voltages and related battery codes.
- Check whether channel A changes plausibly with battery operating conditions or instead drifts, lags, or disagrees with neighboring readings.
- Inspect accessible channel A connectors and wiring for damage, looseness, or corrosion that could add resistance.
- Have the channel A circuit and sensing module tested against the manufacturer's procedure and specification, including checks for high resistance.
- If the circuit passes, have battery cell-group balance and the sensor's calibration or condition assessed with the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Restore a secure connection at the channel A sense connector.
- Clean or repair corroded terminals or damaged channel A wiring.
- Repair a high-resistance connection in the channel A circuit.
- Replace or repair the sensing module if it fails the manufacturer's checks.
- Service a verified battery imbalance or out-of-calibration sensing component as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
The battery system may reduce power, slow charging, or limit electric range if channel A readings remain implausible. Keep trips modest and arrange diagnosis, especially if the vehicle displays a hybrid-system warning or power limitation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
