What it means
The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel E of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS uses channel E's wiring and sensing input to measure a battery cell group. This circuit code sets when the BMS detects a fault in that channel's signal path and cannot rely on the cell-group voltage reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or damaged voltage-sense wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare channel E live voltage with neighboring group readings to determine whether the signal is missing, implausible, or fluctuating.
- With the vehicle shut down as directed by the manufacturer, visually inspect channel E's accessible wiring for breaks, abrasion, or pinched sections.
- Inspect channel E connectors for loose fit, corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins that could interrupt the signal.
- Have a qualified technician isolate the high-voltage battery and test channel E wiring for continuity and shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the wiring and connectors pass, evaluate the voltage-sensing module's channel E input against scan-tool data.
Common fixes
- Repair or replace damaged channel E sense wiring.
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded channel E connector.
- Repair an open or short in the channel E circuit found during testing.
- Repair or replace the battery voltage-sensing module if channel E remains faulty with a verified circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid extended driving until the channel E fault is checked, especially if power is reduced or the vehicle enters limp mode. Charging may be limited or fail, and the system may further restrict hybrid or EV operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
