What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel E of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS receives the cell-group voltage signal through channel E's sense circuit. This code sets when that channel's signal is below the expected circuit range, leaving the BMS unable to trust the channel E measurement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open or high-resistance connection in the sense circuit
- Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame information and compare channel E live data with nearby cell-group readings to confirm the low signal and when it occurs.
- With the vehicle shut down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect channel E wiring for crushed insulation or contact with ground.
- Check the channel E connector for corrosion, loose pins, or poor seating that could create an open or high-resistance path.
- Have a qualified technician isolate the high-voltage battery and test channel E wiring for a short to ground and continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit checks out, compare the channel E input at the sensing module with the scan-tool reading to investigate a module fault.
Common fixes
- Repair channel E sense-wire insulation shorted to ground.
- Clean, secure, or repair the channel E connector.
- Repair an open or high-resistance section of channel E wiring.
- Repair or replace the voltage-sensing module if its channel E input is faulty with verified wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid unnecessary driving while the BMS has a low channel E signal, particularly if the vehicle is already limiting power or charging. The system may enter limp mode or further reduce electric operation because the cell-group reading is unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
