OBD-II fault code

P0B3B: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense A Circuit

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit fault on voltage sense channel A of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Voltage sense channel A measures the voltage of a cell group in the high-voltage battery so the battery management system can assess pack condition and control charging and power output. P0B3B sets when the system detects a fault in channel A's measurement circuit, making that cell-group reading unreliable; the code does not by itself establish whether the cells are faulty.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense circuit failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan-tool battery readings, comparing channel A with other reported cell-group voltages and checking for related battery codes.
  2. Check whether channel A's reported value is missing, fixed, or implausible, and compare it with available battery voltage data using the manufacturer's diagnostic information.
  3. Inspect accessible low-voltage connectors and harness sections for channel A for looseness, corrosion, or damage, without opening the high-voltage battery.
  4. Have the channel A sense wiring and battery voltage-sensing module checked using the manufacturer's high-voltage isolation and test procedures.
  5. If the circuit checks out, assess cell-group balance and battery condition using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before attributing the fault to the pack.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose channel A sense connector or repair damaged accessible wiring.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair the channel A sense circuit if its continuity or connection fails the manufacturer's checks.
  • Replace or repair the battery voltage-sensing module if testing confirms it is faulty.
  • Address a verified cell-group imbalance or battery fault according to the manufacturer's service procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Because the battery management system may limit electric power or charging when channel A cannot be trusted, avoid long or demanding trips and heed hybrid-system warnings. Do not open the high-voltage battery; arrange prompt diagnosis if power is limited or charging is affected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
