What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel A of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Voltage sense channel A measures a cell group's voltage in the high-voltage battery. P0B3D sets when the battery management system sees a reading below the expected range on that channel, which can result from a sense wire shorted to ground, an open, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare channel A's reported voltage with other cell-group readings and any related battery codes.
- Check whether channel A reads unusually low or disappears from scan-tool data, which helps distinguish a low signal from a plausible cell reading.
- Inspect accessible channel A connectors and harness sections for corrosion, loose terminals, or damaged insulation.
- With the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, test the channel A sense circuit for continuity, an unintended short to ground, and excessive connection resistance.
- If the circuit passes, have the sensing module and the relevant cell-group reading evaluated using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair an open or damaged channel A sense wire.
- Repair wiring shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded terminals and restore a secure connector fit.
- Replace or repair the battery sensing module if circuit tests identify it as faulty.
- Address a verified cell-group fault according to the manufacturer's service procedure.
Can I keep driving?
The battery management system may restrict power or charging because it cannot rely on channel A's low reading. Avoid demanding driving and arrange prompt diagnosis; stop safely if the vehicle warns of overheating or sharply limits power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
