OBD-II fault code

P0981: Shift Solenoid D Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The control module detects a range or performance problem in the shift solenoid D control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid D is an electrically controlled valve that regulates transmission fluid flow for gear changes. The transmission control module sets P0981 when the D solenoid circuit's response or operation falls outside the expected range, even if the circuit is not simply open or shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty shift solenoid D
  2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring or connection
  3. Transmission control module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and transmission live data for the D solenoid command and the shift conditions when P0981 appeared; check for related transmission codes.
  2. Inspect the D solenoid connector and wiring for loose or corroded terminals, chafing, or damage that could cause an intermittent or high-resistance connection.
  3. Check shift solenoid D coil resistance and operation using the manufacturer's test procedure and specifications.
  4. Test the D control circuit for opens, shorts, and excessive resistance between the transmission and control module.
  5. If the circuit and solenoid meet specification, verify module powers, grounds, connector terminals, and the D command before concluding the module is faulty.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connection in the D solenoid circuit.
  • Repair wiring with an open, short, or excessive resistance.
  • Replace shift solenoid D if it fails the manufacturer's electrical or operation test.
  • Repair or replace the control module only after its circuit and outputs are confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

A transmission that shifts harshly, slips, or enters limp mode should be driven only as needed to reach a safe place for service; avoid towing and heavy acceleration. Continued slipping or abnormal shifts can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
